Personality vs. Person

Personality vs. Person: Understanding the True Self

Personality can be described as the external expression of who we are. It is the collection of traits, behaviors, attitudes, and patterns that we develop through our upbringing, environment, culture, and experiences. Personality is often what others first notice about us—it is how we present ourselves to the world. For example, someone may be seen as outgoing, quiet, analytical, or humorous. Personality is not fixed; it can evolve over time as we grow, learn, and consciously choose new ways of thinking or behaving. In coaching, personality is often addressed when clients want to shift unhelpful patterns, improve communication, or strengthen interpersonal relationships.

On the other hand, the person represents the deeper, authentic self—the core of our being that exists beyond roles, behaviors, or societal expectations. The person is the essence of who we are, including our values, beliefs, inner wisdom, and unique life purpose. Unlike personality, which can sometimes be shaped to please others, the person is our true self that longs to be expressed fully and authentically. In coaching, connecting with the person means helping clients align their lives with their values, rediscover their strengths, and live from a place of authenticity rather than conditioning. In short, personality is the mask we wear in different situations, while the person is the self behind the mask. Life coaching encourages individuals to understand their personality traits without being limited by them and to reconnect with the deeper aspects of themselves. When personality and person are aligned, individuals experience greater clarity, fulfillment, and harmony in life.
