Understanding luck, comparison, and the mindset shift that leads to personal growth.
Have you ever looked at someone’s life and thought, “How does everything just work out for them?”
In our everyday conversations, we sometimes hear the phrase “She/He has devil’s luck.” It is usually said when someone seems to succeed repeatedly, escape problems easily, or receive opportunities that others feel they have worked much harder for. To those observing from the outside, it may feel as though life is constantly favoring that person.
But what we call “devil’s luck” is often more complicated than it appears. Human beings naturally compare themselves with others. When we see someone moving ahead faster, getting recognition, or avoiding setbacks, it can trigger feelings of frustration, jealousy, or even self-doubt. We start questioning our own journey: “Am I doing something wrong?” or “Why is life harder for me?”
However, the truth is that we rarely see the full picture of another person’s life. What looks like effortless success may actually involve unseen risks, quiet persistence, or a willingness to try again after failures. Many people who appear “lucky” simply take more chances, step into opportunities quickly, or maintain a mindset that allows them to move forward despite uncertainty.
Another important aspect is perception. As humans, we tend to remember the moments when others succeed but forget the many times things might not have worked out for them. Our minds highlight the outcomes that reinforce the belief that someone else is simply “lucky.”
From a personal growth perspective, constantly focusing on someone else’s fortune can distract us from building our own path. Every individual’s journey is shaped by different experiences, timing, and choices. Instead of comparing our struggles to another person’s apparent ease, it may be far more powerful to ask ourselves: “What can I learn from this?”
Luck may open doors for some people, but character, resilience, and consistent effort are what sustain growth in the long run.
In the end, life is not a competition of luck but a journey of self-awareness and evolution. When we shift our focus from comparison to personal development, we begin to see opportunities that were previously hidden behind resentment or doubt.
At times, the real transformation begins the moment we stop measuring our lives against someone else’s “luck.”
